Dogs are generally allowed in certain areas of Great Smoky Mountains National Park but there are some restrictions to ensure the safety of pets and wildlife, as well as to protect the park's natural resources.
Here are some things to consider and guidelines to follow:
-
Dogs are only allowed in designated areas of the park, including picnic areas, campgrounds, and along roads.
-
The scent left behind by a dog can signal the presence of a predator, disrupting or altering the behavior of park wildlife.
-
Pets may become prey for larger predators, such as coyotes and bears. In addition, if your dog disturbs or enrages a bear, it may lead the angry bear directly to you.
- Dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times.
-
Dogs are not allowed on most hiking trails in the park, except two short trails: the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail.
-
Dogs are not allowed in park buildings, on park buses, or in the backcountry.
-
Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs and disposing of waste properly.
It's important to note that the park can be dangerous for pets, especially during hot weather, as dogs can easily overheat on the trails. Additionally, there are bears, snakes, and other wildlife in the park that can pose a threat to pets. Always keep a close eye on your dog and follow the park's guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
